Q: As someone who lives on a budget, what are your thoughts on using box dyes? What are the dos and don’ts of hair products bought from your typical stores?
A: While box dyes can be a budget-friendly option, it’s essential to use them wisely. Here are some of our honest thoughts on this:
Do’s:
- Research and Choose Wisely: Look for box dyes with good reviews and less harsh chemicals. Not all box dyes are created equal, and some are better for your hair’s health.
- Follow Instructions Carefully: This ensures you get the best possible result and minimizes damage.
- Invest in Quality Products: Even on a budget, try to choose the best quality products you can afford. Look for products with nourishing ingredients that suit your hair type.
Don’ts:
- Overuse: Frequent use of box dyes can lead to hair damage, so try to space out applications as much as possible.
- Overlap: Overlapping color can easily create a color correction for you. Make sure you are only retouching new growth only.

- Be Gentle: Use a wide-tooth comb or a soft brush to detangle, starting from the ends and working your way up to avoid pulling and discomfort.
- Keep It Simple: Opt for simple styles like loose braids, ponytails, or letting their curls be natural to minimize styling time.
- Distraction is Key: Try styling their hair during a calm activity, like reading a book or watching a favorite show, to keep them distracted and still.
- Moisturize: Use child-friendly, moisturizing hair products to keep their curls hydrated and easier to manage.
- Be Patient: Understand that it might not be perfect every time and that’s okay. The goal is to keep their hair healthy and manageable.
